Shezhireli Qulaq Kui Project

We invite you to a meeting presenting the «Shezhireli Qulaq Küi» project, organized as part of the «Kazakh Music History» course!

How did Soviet colonial policy transform kuy, the dombra, and the figure of the kuyshi? The «Shezhireli Qulaq Küi» project explores this question from multiple perspectives.

At the meeting, the project author, ännäs Bagdat, will talk about what inspired the creation of the project. Renowned kuyshis Aitolkyn Toktagan and Rustem Nurken will discuss and perform the tradition of playing kuy as it existed before colonial influence. Our discussion will examine the historical fate of the dombra and kuyshi, their role in society, and their significance in the process of decolonization.
