Seminar: Evolution of Market Power in Kazakhstan: Implications for Competition Policy
In recent years, rising concerns over market power and the dominance of “superstar” firms have gained traction globally, with evidence from the U.S. and Europe showing links to declining investment, falling labor shares, and reduced business dynamism. This seminar explores how similar dynamics are playing out in Kazakhstan, where a small number of firms account for a disproportionate share of productivity growth. We document the evolution of markups over time and assess the extent of market concentration across sectors, ownership types, and firm sizes. Using cutting-edge empirical methods, the seminar highlights the implications of rising market power for competition, consumers, and overall economic performance—and discusses how robust antimonopoly policy can help safeguard inclusive growth.
