About the event

Dear NU Community,

The NU Korean Studies Centre invites you to the Korean Studies Seminar Series. The fifth session of the series will be featured with Dr. Myung-hoon Kang from POSTECH. Dr. Kang will lecture on the "Social Acceptance of Nuclear Power in South Korea." We hope this event sheds some light on understanding public views of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan.

Abstract: This lecture examines the social acceptance of nuclear power in South Korea, focusing on the critical role of public trust in the institutions managing nuclear energy. It explores how perceptions of safety, energy demands, and a shared communal identity shape public attitudes toward nuclear power projects. A key emphasis is placed on the trust of local communities in governmental and corporate entities responsible for nuclear management, as this trust significantly influences acceptance levels. The lecture also analyzes the interplay between openness and transparency in policymaking, and institutional accountability in fostering or eroding this trust. By addressing these factors, it highlights the importance of collaborative and transparent approaches to building a societal consensus on nuclear energy’s role in South Korea’s sustainable energy future.
