About the event
A research talk by Dr. Vadim Yapiyev, Senior Researcher at National Laboratory Astana, Nazarbayev University, will focus on groundwater recharge processes in the sedimentary basins of South Kazakhstan.
The presentation examines evidence that deep aquifers are recharged primarily through long-distance Mountain System Recharge from distant mountain regions rather than local precipitation. Based on isotope, hydrochemical, geological, and radiocarbon data, the study shows that these groundwater reserves are very old, dating back to the Last Glacial Period.
The talk highlights the extremely slow renewal of deep groundwater in Central Asia and the need for careful, long-term management of this critical water resource.
