About the event

NU GSPP invites the university community to a research webinar featuring Linda Cook, who will present her latest research on migration politics in contemporary Russia.

The talk, “Migration to Russia: the Politics of Inclusion and Exclusion,” is based on findings from Dr. Cook’s recent book Welfare Nationalism in Europe and Russia: The Politics of 21st Century Exclusionary and Inclusionary Migrations (Cambridge University Press, 2024). She examines how welfare nationalism shapes migration policies and public responses to migrants, with a particular focus on Central Asian labor migrants in Russia. Drawing on the case of authoritarian governance, the discussion highlights how political structures influence both migration policy and the lived experiences of migrants across post-Soviet states.

Dr. Cook is Professor Emerita of Political Science and Slavic Studies at Brown University and an associate of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. Her research focuses on welfare regimes in post-communist states and the politics of international migration.
