About the event

Nazarbayev University will host a research talk by Giulio Schinaia (University of Chicago) titled “Information Frictions and Bargaining: Experimental Evidence from Rural Guinea-Bissau.”

The talk will explore how limited access to market information affects producers’ sales decisions and negotiation strategies in agricultural commodity markets. Drawing on evidence from a nationwide cluster-randomized trial with cashew producers across 290 villages in Guinea-Bissau, the study examines the impact of providing weekly market updates, farmgate prices, and sales guidance during the trading season. The findings show that improved access to information can increase sale prices, strengthen bargaining behavior, and encourage producers to better time and diversify their sales.

The event will be of interest to students and researchers in economics, development studies, public policy, and related fields.
