Dear Nazarbayev University Community,

As part of the course ‘Approaches to Global Development’, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology cordially invites you to attend the guest lecture: “Working towards progress: Collective Governance and the fight against Domestic Violence in Kazakhstan”.

Speaker: Dr. Alexander Wolters, Resident Representative and Country Director, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Kazakhstan.


About the speaker: Since April 2023 Resident Representative and Country Director of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation in Kazakhstan responsible for multiple projects implemented by the Foundations two offices in Almaty and Astana jointly with partners in state structures and in civil society and academia. Before joining the FES, Alexander worked as director of the OSCE Academy in Bishkek for more than five years. In that capacity he oversaw the development of new educational BA and MA programmes, set up and directed the Academy’s new research unit and engaged into a wide range of efforts to increase the Academy’s public standing in the wider region of Central Asia. As director he was chiefly responsible for relations with various state actors across the OSCE area and the growing cooperation with academic institutions within the OSCE Think Tank Network. In the years before his appointment as Academy director, Alexander worked as DAAD Visiting Professor at the OSCE Academy and the American University in Central Asia in Bishkek, teaching courses in political sociology and social theory. He studied in Münster, Tambov, and Frankfurt an der Oder and he has a PhD in Political Sociology.
