About the event

Dr. Salvatore Babones, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, will deliver a lecture examining whether India’s democracy has truly declined or whether international criticism reflects methodological bias and political disagreement.

Drawing on global democracy rankings and his recent book Dharma Democracy (2025), he explained how institutions such as V-Dem assess democratic performance and argued that these measures often misrepresent India’s political reality. The talk offered a nuanced perspective on India’s elections, democratic institutions, and the global debate surrounding Narendra Modi’s leadership.
